Standing poses, prone-faced backbends to strengthen external spinal muscles, short stays in weight-bearing poses, safe forward bends to protect the lumbar. This level is all about proper form in all the basic asanas, or yoga poses. Level 1 teaches how to get the maximum benefit of each pose, while also understanding how to practice safely, thereby avoiding injury. Level 1 isn’t easy. It can be daunting to any practitioner, as you’re expected to be completely vigilant to all instructions, at every moment. When people have been away for a while, and then return, their common comment runs along these lines: my body was fine, could still do the poses. My mind? To stay focused? That’s the big thing lacking after being away… Begin, or Begin Again, and find that focus, for you. Our new Yoga for Strength/ Osteoporosis classes are also good Level 1 classes.
